Our History
It all began with a dynamic team of founders dedicated to welcoming newcomers and helping them feel right at home in the region.
Discover how our Club has grown and evolved over the years, continuing to support our community while staying true to its original mission.

Our Story:
50+ Years of
Community at CERN
1970s
A Place of Our Own
After years of searching for a dedicated meeting space, the Club secured its first permanent home: two rooms on the mezzanine above the newly built CERN restaurant, run by its flamboyant manager, Mr. Tortella. Though the early days required tireless effort from everyone involved, having a dedicated space laid the groundwork for everything to come.
1974
Official Beginnings
In 1974, the Club took a major step forward by formalizing its structure. Member Jenny van Hove used her deep knowledge of Swiss regulations to draft the organization’s official constitution. With its statutes established, the organization was formally founded under the original name Club des Cernoises – CERN Women’s Club.
Fun Fact: Why Tuesday Coffee Mornings?
In those early years, language courses were already held on Tuesdays to support spouses facing work permit restrictions and language barriers. As Tuesday naturally became the main gathering day, it was the obvious choice for launching weekly Coffee Mornings, a tradition that lives on today!
2017
Present: A New Era
Our Club continues to adapt to the needs of the CERN community. In 2017, the organization officially changed its name to the CERN Welcome Club / Club de Bienvenue au CERN to reflect an inclusive, modern identity welcoming everyone.
Our Pioneers
Meet the dynamic founders who paved the way for our vibrant community.
| PIONEER | ROLE & LEGACY |
| Renie (Lady) Adams | The Trailblazer Wife of former CERN Director-General John Adams. She campaigned tirelessly to establish a physical space for CERN families and persuaded Mr. Tortella to host our first cooking classes. |
| Pat Pattison | The Welcoming Host Opened her home to English-speaking newcomers for coffee, helping them navigate local doctors, schools, public transport, and regional customs. |
| Jenny van Hove | The Architect Navigated Swiss regulations to draft our original 1974 Constitution and co-led early French language and cultural trips. |
| Vera Geibel | The Trail Guide Founded the Walking Group. An avid mountaineer who knew every peak and trail in the region, bringing members together in the great outdoors. |
Early Club Activities
Cultural Excursions
& Intercity Trips
Cultural outings expanded rapidly thanks to language group leaders, while Thea Vermeulen initiated the Intercity Group to explore neighboring regions together.
The Cookery
Group
Following popular kitchen classes hosted by Mr. Tortella, member Victoria helped establish an official group where members took turns hosting three-course meals, sharing recipes, and dividing costs.
